Autumn is a lovely time of year for a family photoshoot, the trees are changing colour, and the light can be at its most beautiful.
Choosing outfits can be tricky, but with a little thought and advice, you can be sure to pick the right clothes to compliment your family photoshoot.
As a rule of thumb, if you follow these pointers, you will get it right:
-
Think about the environment we will be shooting in and dress accordingly,
-
Choose 3-4 colours and build everyone’s outfits around them,
-
Embrace layers and textures, wool is great,
-
Please avoid pictures and slogans on clothing,
-
Make sure everyone's clothes fit well.
The Environment
Think about the kind of clothes you would usually wear at the park, on a walk or mooching around town, then simply make your outfits a little smarter. For example, if we are going for a walk, think wellies and woolies. As our weather is somewhat changeable, it is a good idea to have gloves and bobble hats available as they can make a great addition to images as well as keeping everyone warm.
The Colours
As someone who lives and breathes branding - colours and palette are part of my life! But to others coordinating your outfit colours can sound a little OTT! But believe me it works, by choosing complementary colours the photographs come together and pop - focusing the eye on the people in them rather than the clothes they are wearing. The idea is to coordinate not match, so choose three or four colours and pick your outfits with those in mind. Soft colours work well in Autumn, such as – creams, dusty pinks, and soft browns, for example, but deep colours such as mustard and berry red and deep blues work very well too.
The Clothes
For Autumn, think, layers, texture, and cozy - gilets, jumpers and cardigans, thick wool knits. If you don’t want everyone to wear their coats, layers can keep you all warm instead.
